Weekly Wrap-Up 07/14/13

Reviews:

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown

Currently Reading:
I’ll be finishing this up today!
Upcoming:

The same books that I listed last week, ARGH! And the following beauties:

Please ignore the shoddy quality of this photo.
I normally don’t share braggy LOOK AT MY BOOKS pictures. I can’t help myself this week because I’ve received some books that I’m crazy looking forward to!
The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison
The Affairs of Others by Amy Grace Loyd
Tampa by Alissa Nutting
The Measures Between Us by Ethan Hauser
Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen
Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink (I actually whooped for joy when I opened this one!)

Bookish/Bloggish Business:

I’ve been a busy bee this week. I haven’t had as much reading time as usual. It’s okay though, I’m busy with good stuff! Haircut, pedicure, Big Brother 15, and a visit with my mom and sister.

Damn you Big Brother. I swore I was done with you when you started casting 20 year old hard bodies exclusively. Bah. I blame my youngest daughter. “Just watch the first episode with me Mom!” Uh huh.

You’ve probably heard about the extremely racist comments that some of the house-guests on BB15 have been making. It’s incredibly upsetting. That’s all I can say about it for now because it makes my stomach hurt and my hands shake.

I woke up to hear about the Zimmerman verdict and about the death of Cory Monteith. I have no words.

  1. With all the sad news, I'm glad I'm off Facebook and Twitter for a few days. Unfortunately, I couldn't have timed it better. 😦 Of course, I think it's always a good time for those breaks anyway.Hey, where are the gifs today? :)As for A Prayer for Owen Meany, you're making me feel guilty now. I need to get that for the readalong too, but just haven't yet. At least, I still have time and am not rushing it — like some people I know…ahem. 😉

  2. It's a great time for a break Bryan!! No gifs today, lol. I'm doing a whole review in gifs this week though, stay tuned ;)I'm not rushing, I swear! In fact, I started the book way late because I know I read too damn fast, lol.

  3. Ha! Big Brother. I've tried to watch, but I can't keep track of how often it's on. Still, I love to keep up through my friend Melissa's blog (http://smartladieslovestuff.com/television/dumbtv/smart-ladies-love-dumb-tv-big-brother) because she has some hilarious commentary. That is an exciting stack! I can't wait to see what you'll think of Tampa. I have a few of the others waiting for me, too. I'm totally excited about The Affairs of Others and Five Days at Memorial.

  6. I want to DEVOUR the rest of Owen Meany today. If only the chores around here would do themselves!Isn't it? Sigh. I thought things were supposed to get BETTER. It's like we've stepped back in time lately. I don't understand 😦

  7. What a horrible news weekend. (insert sad sigh…)That being said, I've heard nothing but crazy things about Tampa, so I look forward to you review of it. I also have to add that as a huge John Irving fan, I Owen Meany is one of my favorites!

  8. Ah, you have Tampa, I can't wait to get my hands on that book!I have no experience of US Big Brother but if it's anything like UK Big Brother the racism doesn't surprise me. I am also a bit sick of society this week, some tough times at work and sometimes I honestly despair.

  9. LOL!! Girl, it took me YEARS to get back to chunksters after starting blogging. It's frustrating spending so much time on one book, I know. I'm about 2/3rds through with Owen Meany and really hope that I finish by Thursday so that I don't have to lug it on vacation with me. I'm looking forward to Mrs. Poe, too. I'll look forward to what you think of the Jojo Moyes!

  10. I loved Owen Meany! It's one of my favorite Irving novels. I also liked Hotel NH and The World According to Garp…highly recommended. I have tried to stay away from the mainstream stuff this wee, particularly with the Trayvon Martin case. People can be so horrific to each other.

  11. Oh gosh yes … I was reading about the Zimmerman trial last night and was shocked at the verdict. It makes NO sense. And that girl on Big Brother? I saw that on an entertainment show … I can't believe they let her stay there! Though I did see that her and some other guy have been fired from their day jobs. Anyway … enjoy your reading this week!

  12. I liked BB last year, but this summer is not good. Aaryn has to go and GinaMarie is so boring. Cheering for Elissa, for no reason, but to upset Aaryn. 🙂

  13. I never watch television news. Unless The Daily Show counts? But I do have a small obsession with the latest happenings around the world so I have all of these notifications set up on my phone. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it's awful.

  14. I love eyeing your books! What a great collection! I have a copy of The Affairs of Others on my bookstand now and look forward to what you're thoughts on it…. And your youngest daughter is going to keep you \”cool\”! 😉 Which is what my \”new\” granddaughter is going to do for me. I married her grandfather recently and she told him, she \”couldn't wait to meet her new grandma\”… a term I never thought I would hear, but thoroughly love.Have a great week!

  15. Five Days at Memorial is on my reading list too! I can't wait to read your thoughts on it. I wasn't surprised about the Zimmerman verdict but did hope that it would be different. It's so sad that Cory Monteith died. 😦 He was so young.
