I deliberately stay away from series because I'm so terrible at keeping up with them (I've been halfway through Mockingjay for 10 months). But I do adore the Harry Potter series and waited in line for the later books when they were released. And one of these days I will read through Lord of the Rings (probably listen), but I find them so intimidating!
I like series, but only if I don't have to wait a year for the next book to come out. Usually I'll wait until all of the books are released and then read them all in a crazy marathon session 😉 I was intimidated by them too, but once I got into the tale I was a goner!
