Recent Read: The Healing

This was a gorgeous tale from start to end. The Healing by Jonathan Odell is told from the point of view of Granda, a young house slave living in Mississippi. It’s a coming of age tale, a rite of passage story that gripped me immediately. This is a book that I highly recommend. Simply beautiful.

The Song of Achilles

I didn’t start my blog in time to report on the Orange Prize for Fiction when it happened this year. The winner was announced on May 30, 2012. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller was the winner (well deserved winner in my humble opinion) and I’m so glad that it was. What an amazing read.

It’s one of those books that brings to mind the words epic and sweeping. It’s suspenseful and romantic, with some of the most beautiful language that’s ever been put down on paper. The love story is one of the most believable that I’ve read. The Trojan War, the cranky Greek Gods and Goddesses…this is a book not to be missed.

Have you read it? Will you be reading it? I’d love to hear what you think!
