Blogging:
There’s been nary a word here on The Relentless Reader but I’ve been a busy little bee over on The Socratic Salon. Thanks to everyone who shared our links, commented on our posts, or supported us in any way. Being able to talk freely without worrying about spoilers has been freeing! People are hungry to dig deep into books. It’s been surprising, awesome, and gratifying. I hope you’ll check out our about page to see the who, the what, and the why.
Reading:
I finished Mosquitoland and read We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche. It’s based on a TED talk Adiche gave. (You should totally watch it!) I’m currently reading Kate Mulgrew’s memoir Born With Teeth.
Watching:
I’ve decided to get back into Gilmore Girls. I don’t know what I think about it. It’s a charming show but the forced-sounding banter thing some of the actors do gets on my nerves. Maybe I’ll get used to it. Maybe they’ll find their rhythm and it won’t sound so clunky to my ears? (I’m still in season 1) The show is a cultural touchstone that I missed out on the first time around and I’m determined to stick with it.

Eating:
Most of our meals this week consisted of leftover Wonder Woman cake. I’m not complaining.
Bragging:
It’s been a great week for my kids. Avery (15) was able to start The Acceptance Project at her school. There were hoops to jump through and school board members to convince and she never gave up and I’m wildly proud. A board member said that there’s “something in our handbook about tolerance already” and then asked “why do they need a club like this?” 
Because people like you continue to ask questions like that. That’s why.
They had their first meeting this week and let’s just say we didn’t bring enough donuts to feed all of the kids that showed up. More proof that clubs like this are necessary.
In more shallow news, my son Carter (16) was chosen by a local photographer to be a senior rep/model for the upcoming year. (He’ll feature in her senior portrait advertising, etc.) We keep teasing him about his modeling gig and how one day soon we’ll see him on a billboard in Times Square. He hates us a little, ha.

Good for your daughter!!! The \”why does (insert group) need their own (club, holiday, etc)\” questions drive me INSANE.

Great for your kids. And good for you for the acceptance project. I think great damage comes from exclusionary practices — even ones that seem mere slights. Still just looking at the Socratic Salon. Will figure out how to participate.

I felt the same way about Gilmore Girls and gave up about halfway through the second season. I think I might have liked it if I had watched it when it actually aired, but I couldn't get past the scripted banter, either.

I'm so excited to get involved in Socratic Salon! It's a brilliant idea and the site looks great (though I couldn't look too closely, because I haven't started Hausfrau yet). I feel the same way you do about Gilmore Girls. But it was on right after school every day in jr. high, so I kind of watched it anyway haha. Congratulations to both Avery and Carter!

I missed the Gilmore Girls first time around too. Tried last summer three times to watch. Got up to the episode in season 1 where she gets into private school and just couldn't get further. It absolutely doesn't appeal to me. But I have a feeling if I had watched it originally I probably would've liked it then.

I read Avery's post for I'm Lost in Books and she is incredibly eloquent! I also missed Gilmore Girls the first time around…I was more of a Dawson's Creek fan, but that was also full of scripted banter!

I missed Gilmore Girls the first time too. Actually, that's not true. I tried to watch it the first time around. I could never get into it. For scripted banter, give me The West Wing every single time. Mmmm…cake. It turned out beautifully!

I'm still plugging along but only when I can't decide which series to devour next, lol. The acting isn't skilled enough to pull off what is supposed to sound like off-the-cuff banter and it makes my head hurt 😉

That's what I keep thinking too, if I had watched it back in the day it wouldn't grate on me so much. I'm still watching it, but very slowly 😉

Thank you SO much! She's my little writer. I never saw Dawson's either. I was at a bad age for all of those shows when they came out. Or maybe I was too busy mothering tiny kids?
